Introduction | The records of Mary Manse College, a Catholic educational institution for women, span the period from 1922-1975. The collection documents the college's creation and growth, the effects of changing social values and church directives, and fluctuations in the economy. Administrative records, correspondence, subject files, literary productions, legal and financial documents, scrapbooks, printed material, and audio-visual materials provide information on the activities of and at Mary Manse College. The collection also includes records related to the Catholic University of Peking, which was connected to Mary Manse through a former administrator and educator, Monsignor George Barry O'Toole, Rector of the University. The papers of Edward Mohler, a member of the Mary Manse faculty since the college's foundation, are also contained in the collection. These consist primarily of his numerous contributions to Catholic publications, but include a scrapbook and several photographs. The collection was donated to the Center for Archival Collections in May 1976. The collection is open to those researchers who have written approval of the Superior General of the Ursuline Sisters of Toledo, Ohio. This policy will be in effect until July 1, 2003, at which time the collection will be open with no restrictions. This finding aid was prepared by Susan Irwin during the summer of 1992. |
Agency History | Mary Manse College (MMC) was founded in 1922 at the request of Bishop Samuel Stritch (later Cardinal Stritch). That year, Bishop Stritch approached Mother Scholastica of the Ursuline Order with a request that the Ursulines establish a college for the Catholic young women of the diocese of Toledo. At seventy years, the Ursulines were the oldest teaching order in the diocese; the group's history reflected over three centuries of accomplishment in Catholic higher education. Mary Manse opened in September 1922 with three buildings and thirty students. Our Lady's, Mount Carmel, and Immaculate Halls constituted the original campus. Brescia Hall was opened in 1924, and Urban hall was added in 1926. Lourdes Hall was purchased by the college in 1943 and served as a residence hall. By 1947, the school served over two hundred students and boasted a library of over 21,000 volumes, as well as an art studio on Parkwood Avenue. The school operated under the charter given the Ursulines by the State of Ohio in 1873 jointly with St. John's University conducted by the Jesuits, and the president of St. John's served as acting president of Mary Manse. Mary Manse came to be known as the Women's College of St. John's University as a result of this alliance, and collaboration between the two institutions provided social, intellectual, and cultural experiences for the students of both institutions. MMC was recognized in 1926 as a degree-granting institution by the State of Ohio Department of Education, and was accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools in 1934. Mary Manse assumed responsibility for Teacher training programs in the diocese in 1941. The college offered degrees in arts and sciences, music, medical technology, and nursing education. An accelerated program during World War II offered degrees in three years, and an adult education program was begun in 1951. Mary Manse was administered by the Ursulines until July 1974, when William E. Salesses was chosen as the first layman to serve as president. The college's steady growth over the decades was highlighted by the renovation of the former Epworth Methodist Church into Mary Manse College Memorial Library and the expansion of Lourdes dormitory in the late 1960s. In 1971, the college went coeducational, and in 1972 administrators revised the academic calendar from the traditional semester sequence to a "3-3 plan," which allowed for a class load of three courses for each of 3 eleven-week terms. Economic recession in the 1970s, however, plagued the small college, and it declared bankruptcy in 1975. |
