Introduction | The records of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 1883 - 2001, were transferred for microfilming to the Center for Archival Collections, Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio 43403, in August 2001, with the cooperation of Reverend G. Allan Fillman of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Payne, Ohio. The collection consists of baptisms*, first communions, confirmations, marriages* and deaths. Due to inconsistencies in pagination and transcription of data, researchers are encouraged to refer to all volumes within each series. (See order of microfilming for a detailed list of these records.) These records also include one record book of baptisms and marriages of Latty, Ohio from 1887 - 1896. This register and this collection was prepared by Jennifer Golis in August 2001. *There is a seventy (70) year access restriction on baptism and marriage records. No restrictions apply to the remainder of this collection. |
Agency History | St. John the Baptist Catholic Church began as a Station of Antwerp in 1873. In 1883, the parish built their first church. With the completion of the church, St. John the Baptist became a Mission of Antwerp. In 1892, the parish of St. John received their first resident pastor, Rev. J. P. McCloskey. In this same year the parish was assigned the Missions of Latty and Paulding. The priests of Payne served both of these Missions until 1901. In 1904, their small fame church was replace by a larger brick church that is still in use by the parish. Currently St. John the Baptist Catholic Church is a sister parish of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Paulding, Ohio. Mossing, Lawrence A. S.T.D. History of the Diocese of Toledo.
