Introduction | The Loyal B. Wort Papers consist of photocopies of a series of Civil War era letters, primarily from Loyal B. Wort, of Hicksville, Ohio, to his wife, Susan G. (Hendershot) Wort. The collection spans the period of his service from 1861 to 1864. The collection was donated to the Center for Archival Collections by Mike Dewyre of Pemberville, Ohio on behalf of the 21st Ohio Volunteer Infantry Reenactment Regiment on 29 December 1994. No restrictions exist on the use of this collection. Duplication is permitted for the purposes of preservation and research. The collection was processed and register prepared by Marilyn Levinson, Curator of Manuscripts in 1995, and revised in November 2000. |
Biographical Sketch | Loyal B. Wort (December 6, 1830-April 30, 1893) was born in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania and moved with his parents to Ohio in 1832, first living in Delaware County, and in 1848 moving to Hicksville, in Defiance County. Married on January 4, 1853 to Susan G. Hendershot, he went on to have a family of one son and seven daughters. On August 26, 1861 Loyal enlisted in Co. E, 21st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, serving as a regimental musician. At the expiration of his three-year enlistment on September 19, 1864, he left the service. |
Scope and Content | The Loyal Barber Wort Papers consist of a series of more than 60 Civil War era letters from Loyal B. Wort, of Hicksville, Ohio, to his wife, Susan G. Wort, with a few letters from other family members and friends. Transcripts with notations have been provided for some of the correspondence by the donors. Loyal B. Wort (b. December 6,1830) served with the 21st Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company E, from August 1861 till the expiration of his original three-year enlistment in September 1864, serving as a Regimental musician. The correspondence presents a fairly complete series of communications during the period Loyal was in the army. |
